In fact, I can typically find a banana for less than a dollar in most places!\n<p>Fruit is meant to be a good part of a balanced diet, so even if you do end up spending a few bucks more on your favorite fruit, at least it\u2019s for a worthy cause.\n</p><p>Even something like pineapples, a tropical fruit which can only be grown in certain climates, are still easy to find almost anywhere.\n</p><p>Thanks to mass production, even after shipping costs they still won\u2019t end up being too costly.\n</p><p>But what if I told you there was a certain type of pineapple that is worth thousands of dollars?\n</p><p>To be fair, that wouldn\u2019t be too far off from how things were a few centuries ago.\n</p><h2>Looking into the past&hellip;\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-187591 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2019%5C/03%5C/pineaplles-1700s.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"Pineapples' the most expensive fruit width='\"728\"' height='\"360\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pineaplles-1700s.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>To put things into perspective, let\u2019s take a step back in time!\n</p><p>In the 1700\u2019s, <a title='\"10' fascinating facts about pineapples href="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/fascinating-pineapple-facts%5C/%5C%22">pineapples used to be a status symbol of wealth.\n<p>This was because they weren\u2019t grown in Europe, so when world explorers brought back this rare and exotic new fruit, supply was low and demand was high.\n</p><p>In those days, one pineapple would cost today\u2019s equivalent to $8,000 dollars!\n</p><p>Of course, pineapples are now easily acquired, even by us average folks, and the symbol is gone.\n</p><p>However, there are still a few pineapples with a hefty price tag on them.\n</p><p>At the Lost Gardens of Heligan in the <a title='\"27' interesting facts about the united kingdom href="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/united-kingdom-facts%5C/%5C%22">United Kingdom, you\u2019ll find pineapples grown in mud structures heated with rotting manure.\n<p>But don\u2019t worry \u2013 the pineapples never actually come into contact with the manure.\n</p><p>The odd strategies used here are reflective of older techniques in order to grow this tropical fruit in a colder climate.\n</p><p>In fact, the structure these rare pineapples are grown in was unearthed in 1991 and renovated just two years later to a working state.\n</p><h2>How much does it cost to make these pineapples?\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-187425 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2019%5C/03%5C/pineapple-slices.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"Slices' of fresh pineapple width='\"728\"' height='\"360\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pineapple-slices.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>Well technically, these special pineapples aren\u2019t even on the market \u2013 so they\u2019re priceless.\n</p><p>However with the manpower over the course of the 2 years it takes to grow a pineapple, the cost to make each pineapple is $1,300.\n</p><p>So if they\u2019re not for sale, where do they go?\n</p><p>The successfully grown pineapples go right back to the staff who grew them as an appreciation for growing them in the first place. But, one of the pineapples <em>has been given away.\n<p>The second pineapple ever grown in the Lost Gardens was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II in honor of her 50<sup>th wedding anniversary.\n<p>If that\u2019s what it takes to get your hand on one of these Victorian-grown pineapples, I wouldn\u2019t hold your breath!\n</p><h2>How much are these pineapples worth?\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-187423 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2019%5C/03%5C/gold-pineapple.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"Crazy' expensive fruit width='\"728\"' height='\"360\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gold-pineapple.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>If one of these elusive pineapples were to go up for auction or sale, due to the rarity, ancient technique, time spent growing, and manual labor, these pineapples are worth $16,000!\n</p><p>Although you&rsquo;ll probably never be able to taste one for yourself, staff describes the taste as \u201cdeliciously sweet, not stringy, and with an explosive flavor.\u201d\n</p><p>On the plus side, at least the legacy of these pineapples will make us appreciate the lowly cost of our standard Dole pineapples at the grocery store!\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"</p><p>Fruit is meant to be a good part of a balanced diet, so even if you do end up spending a few bucks more on your favorite fruit, at least it\u2019s for a worthy cause.
