Many of these were convicted criminals.\n</p><p>The wall&rsquo;s construction continued during the rule of Northern Wei (386-534 AD). 300,000 people were put to work on a single section, just south of Datong.\n</p><p>607-608 AD saw the north and south political divisions shake, and a further 1,000,000 people were ordered in to continue working on the great structure.\n</p><p>These figures pale in comparison to the millions of laborers who were conscripted during the Ming dynasty (1386-1644).\n</p><p>Their jobs were to modernize, strengthen and extend the wall. The project took more than a century to complete.\n</p><p>Sadly during the work, thousands died of accidents, exposure to the elements, physical exhaustion and sickness.\n</p><h2 class='\"list\"'>Handcarts were used on flat landscapes and gentle slopes.\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-202395 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2014%5C/07%5C/great-wall-of-china-handcarts.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"Handcarts' were used on the flat landscapes and gentle slopes. width='\"728\"' height='\"400\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/great-wall-of-china-handcarts.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>Goats and donkeys were used to haul bricks and lime.\n</p><p>It was harsh, unrelenting work (some might coin the phrase; blood, sweat, and tears here) that built this great monument, that at its highest peaks offer panoramic views today.\n</p><h2 class='\"list\"'>During the Ming dynasty, watchtowers were added every so often.\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-202394 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2014%5C/07%5C/great-wall-of-china-watchtowers.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"The' great wall of china watchtowers width='\"728\"' height='\"400\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/great-wall-of-china-watchtowers.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>These served as signal towers to warn <a href="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/china-facts%5C/%5C%22">China of enemies, and cannons were also placed for defense nearby.\n<p>The watchtowers were also used as living quarters for soldiers and storerooms for their provisions.\n</p><p>These towers made sure that no part of the wall would be unprotected.\n</p><p>Most of the ruins today are unrestored from battle and weather conditions. Tourists can see a crumbling wall that reveals the core.\n</p><h2 class='\"list\"'>In the 13<sup>th Century, the Wall was breached by Mongol soldiers.\n<p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-202398 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2014%5C/07%5C/great-wall-of-china-breach.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"In' the century wall was breached by mongol soldiers. width='\"728\"' height='\"400\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/great-wall-of-china-breach.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>In the 17<sup>th Century, it was breached by Manchu soldiers.
