{"id":791,"date":"2009-12-24T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-24T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/2009\/12\/history-of-advent-calendars.html"},"modified":"2025-02-16T21:22:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-16T21:22:52","slug":"history-of-advent-calendars","status":"publish","type":[],"link":"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/history-of-advent-calendars\/","title":{"rendered":"The History Of Advent Calendars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Advent is the start of the Christmas season in Britain; it begins four Sundays before Christmas.\n</p><p>Advent calendars are a countdown to Christmas Day; they start on <a href="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/day%5C/december-1%5C/%5C%22">December 1<sup>st.\n<p>The windows of the calendar are opened every day leading up to Christmas, where you can see a pretty picture or find some chocolate inside.\n</p><h2>Advent Calendar Origins.\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-201144 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2009%5C/12%5C/1-advent-calendar.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"Advent' calendar origins. width='\"728\"' height='\"360\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/1-advent-calendar.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>The very first advent calendars were produced in the early 1800s in Germany, although not the cardboard type we get these days.\n</p><p>Christians thought of different ways of counting down the days from the start of Advent to Christmas Day.\n</p><p>At first, Christians kept track of the days by making chalk marks on their door, which were rubbed off one by one as Christmas got closer.\n</p><p>Advent Candles and putting up a small religious picture to mark each day were other ways of counting down the days.\n</p><p>The first actual advent calendar, which we still buy today, was produced in the early 1900s, although first mass-produced in 1908 by Gerhard Lang, who worked at the Reichhold &amp; Lang printing office in Munich, Germany.\n</p><p>The business produced over thirty different calendar patterns until the 1930s. These calendars had 24 doors and were a lot better decorated than the advent calendars we have these days.\n</p><h2>The Advent Calendar Chocolate.\n</h2><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"alignnone' size-full wp-image-201145 src="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2009%5C/12%5C/2-advent-chocolate.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"The' advent calendar chocolate. width='\"728\"' height='\"360\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/www.factstoryhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/2-advent-chocolate.jpg' https: sizes='\"(max-width:'>\n</p><p>Before long, advent calendars had doors that, when opened, contained religious pictures, and some had <a title='\"100' facts about chocolate href="%5C%22https:%5C/%5C/www.factstoryhub.com%5C/100-chocolate-facts%5C/%5C%22">chocolate in to keep the children&rsquo;s attention.\n<p>This was proving to be popular over the years but had to be put on hold when World War II started because paper, cardboard, and chocolate were limited.\n</p><p>However, once the war was over, the production of advent calendars soon picked back up in 1946, not containing chocolates though.\n</p><p>Towards the end of the 1950s, chocolate advent calendars reappeared and started to spread across the world.\n</p><p>Ten years later, many countries were using the advent calendar to count the days to Christmas Day.\n</p><p>Advent calendars are still very popular all across the world and now come in thousands of different varieties, some with just pictures in, others with just chocolate.\n</p><p>The religious meaning of the advent calendars has been lost, though.
